Such a loss, but nothing compared the gain in fond memories. Uncle Vinnie was a bright light.
As a pre-teen, I remember looking forward to going out to the Island to enjoy BBQ chicken on real a charcoal grill! Jason and I would inevitably get caught trying to mess with Auntie Anne’s porcelain collection in the livingroom, and Uncle Vinnie would flash a wink our way, knowing full well our intentions to “troll.” We would then proceed up the dark stairs to cousin Raymond’s drum set. No matter how loud and painful, Uncle Vinnie would tell us how great we sounded. Raymond eventually had to hide the stix and Cousin Lisa would grab us up and bring us back down to the kitchen table. The basement apartment became our next “target” of mischief. Uncle Vinnie would let us slip through the door with a smile….”take care of business” he would say. Which ever cousin was living down there at the time received us lovingly but also fearfully! Cousin Michael, the closest to our age, would drag us to the carpet for a wrestling match. Uncle Vinnie followed in his father’s footsteps and would serve as TimeKeeper for the matches.
As a teen, Uncle Vinnie served as my Confirmation sponsor. When we went up to the altar to receive the oil anointing, Uncle Vinnie fiercely defended my honor when the priest confirmed me as “Anthony” rather than “Russell.” “My nephew’s name is Russell, not Anthony!” Being an Abbatiello, we were first in a looong line of students waiting to be confirmed. But Uncle refused to move until the priest got it right. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that I chose “Anthony” as a “confirmation name”; I liked the attention 🙂
Uncle Vin you will be in my prayers always. And cousins Lisa & Gene, Raymond & Donna, and Michael & Enza – I pray for peace and smiles whenever you think of him.
Love,
Russ

In loving memory of Vincent Abbatiello, Renée & Tony pledged & donated to the American Heart Association.
My brother , Vinny , truly loved his family, his parents and his many friends down through the years. I very rarely heard him complain about anything.
Although, we were nine years apart in age, Vinny always tried to include me in all that he was doing. He always showed me great love and respect and I knew he would always be there for me.
No one ever had a better big brother. I will miss him dearly.
Thank you the many hours of guidance at MHCC. You were a wonderful person and mentor. Every time I hear a song by Hall & Oats I fondly think of you. RIP Vinny. My sincere condolences to all your family. Serina
