Norm was a talented guy with a strong sense of design and for what makes a good story. He was one of my most unforgettable characters in 47 years as a journalist.
Chi-caw-go Norm was serious about his job and funny, too. I always was amused when he channeled Dustin Hoffman’s character in “Rain Man”: “Five minutes to Wapner” and “I’m an excellent paginator.”
He loved his White Sox and despised the Cubs. He was thrilled when his beloved Sox finally won the World Series in 2005. Two years earlier, he was overjoyed when the hated Cubbies blew the pennant by collapsing in the playoffs. I recall Norm glowing during the infamous Bartman game.
We shared a lot of laughs and put out thousands of good sports sections together. Those memories will never fade for me.
