Richard Ericson of Smithtown, N.Y. passed into heaven on Wednesday January 22, 2025 in New Jersey with his daughter, Laura Granger and son-in-law Michael Granger by his side. Richard was born in Hollis, Queens on April 27, 1934 to Walter Buenau Sr and Mary “Ruth” Buenau (McGowan). After his parents divorced his mother remarried to Ralph W. Ericson who adopted Richard. Richard graduated from Sewanhaka H.S. in 1951 and joined the U.S. Navy where he served in Korea until 1955. He started his career as an electrician and was the first chairman of the Housewiring Unit. He began teaching at the Local IBEW # 25 JATC in 1966. While working he attended Hofstra University during the evening and earned his degree. He also completed a four-year NJATC Instructor Program at the University of Tennessee. He was eventually appointed Director of the JATC where he earned many honors. He was National Chairman of the National Electrical Training Directors Association, an organization of electrical training directors throughout the country and Canada. He was a longtime member of the IAEI , sat on the BOCES II & III Advisory Committee and was an appointed member of the Suffolk County Private Industry Council. During his time as Training Director, he was successful at getting Department of Labor grants to develop Asbestos and Hazard Communication Programs.
Upon retiring in 1996 he spent precious time with his beloved grandchildren and traveled around the world with his wife Milvi. He lovingly nursed his wife through illness in her later years. After her death in 2018 he continued to pursue his life’s passions with vigor. Richard loved the outdoors, he loved to fish, play golf, he was an avid bridge player and also enjoyed playing poker. He continued to travel with friends and enjoyed attending concerts, shows, experiencing new dining experiences and rooting for his favorite team, the NY Yankees. Richard is remembered for his love of life, his always positive outlook, his sense of humor and his deep caring and consideration for others. Richard is survived by his daughter Laura Granger and his son Carl Ericson. Dear father-in law to Michael Granger and Kris Ericson. Loving grandfather to Luke Granger, Alec Granger and Michele Adler(Granger) and her husband Justin Adler. Proud great grandfather to Mackenzie Rae Adler. His family will forever cherish all of the wonderful memories of years spent together.
