Robert J. DeMarzo, 95, passed away peacefully on Jan. 26 surrounded by close family who were at his side at Good Shepherd Hospice, Port Jefferson, succumbing to complications from illnesses he valiantly battled during the past two years.

He is survived by Theresa (nee Patti) his wife of 67 years, sons Robert (Camille) of Smithtown, N.Y., and Christopher (Jenine) of Rockville Center, N.Y. He is also survived by his loving brother John (Irma); five adoring grandchildren: Arianna, Robert, Vittorio, Christian and Giovanni as well as nieces and nephews.

Robert was born in Manhattan to Cesira (nee Rissi) and John, grew up in Bensonhurst, was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War serving in Europe for the Adjutant General’s Corps. Shortly after his honorable discharge, he joined the New York City Police Department as a patrolman, was promoted to Detective status and retired after more than 20 years service.

For the NYPD, he worked mainly in East New York serving in the 69th and 71st Precincts. On the job, he attended night school earning a degree from Brooklyn College. During his tenure, he worked many high profile cases, specialized in a range of capacities including homicide, robbery and narcotics. Of his many accomplishments on the force, he was most proud of single-handedly delivering a baby who arrived before the mother could be taken to the hospital. In return, the mother named the baby after Robert.

Following his retirement from the NYPD, he pivoted to the private sector working in a variety of loss-prevention, operations and security positions for major retailers in the Northeast and Canada.

Robert and Theresa moved from the Marine Park area of Brooklyn to raise their children on Long Island (East Northport) where he resided for nearly 50 years before moving to the BrightView Senior Living Center in Sayville, N.Y.
