George Alfred Hohenstein
November 15, 1946 – May 27, 2026

George Alfred Hohenstein passed away peacefully on May 27, 2026, at the age of 79, surrounded by his family at the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook. Born on November 15, 1946, in Jackson Heights, Queens, George was the beloved son of Marie and Francis Hohenstein and brother of Frank Hohenstein.

George dedicated his life to service — to his country, his community, and his family. At just 17 years old, he proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, beginning a lifelong commitment to serving others. He later continued that commitment through over 30 years of service in the United States Army National Guard retiring at the rank of Sergeant First Class.

George also served with distinction in the New York City Police Department for 30 years, rising to the rank of Detective Sergeant in the Homicide Division. He took immense pride in his work and earned the respect of colleagues and friends through his integrity, dedication, and unwavering sense of duty.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, George was deeply committed to his community. He was an active member of the VFW and devoted countless years to the Boy Scouts, mentoring and supporting others through volunteer service. Known for his generosity and selflessness, George consistently placed the needs of others before his own and quietly gave his time and energy wherever it was needed.

Above all else, George cherished his family. He was the loving father of Kimberly (Art) Mochi; Kelley (Chris) Kwasnik; Jennifer (Rich) Meschi; and his son, George Hohenstein. He was also the proud grandfather of Gianna, Artie, Emily, Cameron, Abigail, and Lily. He treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren and found great joy in watching them grow.

In his free time, George enjoyed riding motorcycles, fishing, volunteering for cause-based car shows and making memories with family and friends. He will be remembered for his strength, loyalty, compassion, and the countless lives he touched through his service and kindness.

George’s legacy of dedication, honor, and love will live on in all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

George’s commitment to helping others continued through his donation of his body to science. Family and friends are welcome to join in a memorial visitation at Branch Funeral Home in Smithtown on Saturday, June 6th (2pm – 4pm and 6pm – 8pm) to honor and remember his life. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10:45am on Monday, June 8th at St. James RC Church in Setauket.

Those wishing to honor George’s memory are invited to make a donation to the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook in lieu of flowers.
