Mary Hoage

March 4, 1943 ~ September 21, 2024
Born in:
New York, New York
Resided in:
Hauppauge, New York
Mary was born, the oldest of three girls, on 3/4/43 to Josephine and Anthony Weis in New York City. She was raised in Cambria Heights, NY where she started school, eventually graduating from Fordham University with a teaching degree. She started teaching elementary school soon after graduation. Then, in the summer of 1966, she met Ron Hoage at a dance in New Hyde Park. They fell in love and were married 8/20/67. The following year, they bought a house in Smithtown where they raised their three children, Ron Jr., Sandy, & Dennis. Not long after, a coworker gave Ron a Truth book, and the two of them began studying together in 1970. Then on 6/10/73, they were both baptized as Jehovah’s Witnesses in Southampton, NY. After raising their family, Mary went back to work teaching in the Smithtown School District, where she eventually retired in 2020. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, cooking, and traveling with family and friends. Known for having a great sense of humor, her laugh was contagious, putting others at ease. Mary would frequently be seen reading, and instilled a love of reading in all three of her children. She loved playing games with family and friends, quick to call out a cheater in any game. Most of all, her family remembers her as being warm, kind, and patient, a wonderful wife, and simply the best mother and grandmother they could ever ask for.
Preceded in death by her sister Adele, and son, Ron Jr., she is survived by her husband Ron, daughter and son-in-law Sandy and Michael Scala, son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Susan Hoage, daughter-in-law Judy Hoage, grandchildren Mikayla and Austin Scala, sister Josephine Byrne, and numerous nieces and nephews.

It seems that Mary was waked & buried on the same day as my husband. . I just found a slip of paper in my husband’s cards from Branch Funeral Home: “ Our hearts ache that we can’t be there in person, but please know our thoughts and love are with you. We’ll always cherish the memories and bond we shared with Mary. Praying that Jehovah provides you all with the strength and peace you need during this painful time. Much love, Lois, Leah and Bill”
