Aida Rosa grew up on a beautiful tropical farm in western Puerto Rico with her loving grandmother, Michaela and cherished mother, Eulalia, accompanied by her two siblings, Carlos and Carmen.
She loved climbing trees, connecting with the farm’s animals (especially a friendly and very emotionally-attached white pig named Canela with long beautiful eyelashes), and dancing in the kitchen with her grandmother and mother while cooking traditional Puerto Rican dishes, filling the home with tantalizing aromas and abundant warmth.
She adored the farm’s fruit trees, and later in life, carried on her love of them by going apple picking every year in Eastern Long Island with her daughter, Raquel.
Another of Aida’s most cherished childhood memories was her mother keeping a cabinet of specialty exotic glassware. She would delight deeply whenever a new piece was added to the collection. She carried this tradition on throughout her life as well to honor her mother, earning the affectionate title “The Queen of Cups” by her daughter Rebecca’s partner, Mark.
In her early teens, her family relocated to New York City and she was in awe of the bustling streets, twinkling city lights, and shops filled to the brim with beautiful clothing and trinkets.
Central Park was one of her favorite places, where she marveled at the changing leaves (stepping on the crunchiest leaves she could find always gave her a thrill!).
The electric joy of 60’s artists like Elvis Presley carried her through a new era in the Big City, which was filled with learning (which she always loved with a deep passion), exploration, and adjusting to the nuances of a new chapter away from rural farm life.
It was in Manhattan that she was introduced to her husband Leo Ocasio, who was the son of her mother’s best friend at work, Josephina.
Leo was struck by Aida’s beauty and grace, immediately knowing he wanted her to be his wife. Aida was deeply moved by Leo’s dedication to mentoring children and devout Catholic values, and knew he would be a supportive and caring father.
They were married in Astoria, NY on November 22, 1975 at Holy Rosary Church and remained married for 35 years.
It was then that Aida and Leo began a journey in marriage that started with several years of travel to Latin America and Europe, which fueled many hilarious stories that kept the family cracking up at the dining room table for years to come.
The pair ultimately moved to Long Island, NY and had two daughters, Rebecca and Raquel.
Aida loved reading to her children, exploring Long Island Beaches, and facilitating grand art projects with the girls, which instilled a passion for creativity and excellence in both of them. Rebecca is now a salsa dancer and visual artist and Raquel is now a singer, multi-instrumentalist musician, and visual artist due to Aida’s creative influences.
Aida filled the house with beautiful decor for every season, hosted many joyful parties, and adored celebrating every holiday. She could always be found with a cup of coffee in hand, tending to her beautiful garden, or spending quality time with her loving sister-in-law, Ruth.
Aida also had a background as a nurse and taught her children about good health and wise caution; her healing nature impacted both her children to want to help others heal both physically and psychologically. She brought her compassionate nature and strong work ethic to where she worked at Northwell Manhasset hospital for 25+ years.
Later in life, Aida revitalized her love of latin dancing, where she dove deep into New York’s salsa scene and began taking classes in salsa, bachata, tango, and more. Her daughter Rebecca encouraged her to paint the town and deepen her love of dance, opening a whole new world of joy and connection, including meeting her dear friend, Joanne.
Aida loved getting dressed to the nines in sparkly fashionable clothing and heels, for dances, dinners, and gatherings – she was always ready for a party!
She came brightly alive whenever Marc Anthony, Pitbull, Daddy Yankee, Celia Cruz, Natalia Jiminez, or any of her favorite artists came on.
Aida also loved going to concerts, Broadway shows, and traveling to weekend destinations, often planned with deep affection by her daughter Raquel. Her favorite staycation was always New York City, where she could re-live her younger years through strolling happily by all the places she worked and enjoyed in the 60’s and 70’s.
She would fondly recount many memories of people and events along the way as she poked into jewelry stores, gift shops, and clothing stores to browse and enjoy all the dazzling variety.
She would always return from the city or her travels with a treasure trove of souvenirs to generously give her loved ones. Aida was pure generosity and love.
One of Aida’s favorite ways to unwind were quiet weekends at home relaxing with friends and family, cooking, and indulging in classic romantic comedies. Aida loved to laugh, swoon over period-piece love stories, and reupholster any piece of furniture she could get her hands on to breathe new life into things.
Aida breathed life into everyone she came in contact with. Her kindness, humor, feisty spirit, and strength left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
She had a deep love for family and friends that expanded beyond her nuclear family, including her grand-nephew Sebastian, her cousins Nylsa and Nereida, Leo’s family, her close friend Karen, and her work colleagues Alanna, Vincenza, and Mike.
She will be deeply missed and loved eternally; until we meet again.

My precious mother. Your light, tenderness, and love will be with me for the rest of my life. There are not enough words of gratitude to express how thankful I am for the woman you raised me to be. I love you forever, to the moon and back, through all galaxies and dimensions, through all space and time.

Thank you, Susan ❤️
Some of my very first memories of Aida are our after-school drives to the beach. She loved the beach, and she would take us whenever she could. I remember our Blockbuster nights, picking out a movie when I would sleep over, and Saturday mornings when Raquel and I would quietly sneak downstairs, trying our hardest not to wake her while we watched cartoons.
I’ll always remember Aida and her husband taking me along on so many adventures to Six Flags and Dorney Park. She never made me feel like I was just her daughter’s friend. She welcomed me, included me, and loved me like I was part of the family.
I remember how beautiful she always looked, with her beautiful outfits and makeup perfectly done. I also remember seeing her up so late studying while she was in nursing school. Even as a child, I remember thinking how incredibly strong she was working, going to school, and still being the amazing mom she was to Becky and Raquel.
And then there was her cooking. I will never forget Aida’s delicious Puerto Rican meals, especially Easter and all the wonderful food she would make. Those flavors and memories left such a lasting imprint on my life. There are honestly so many memories of Aida that I could fill pages and pages and still not capture them all.
Aida was a kindhearted, warm, welcoming, and beautiful soul who made everyone around her feel loved. When I look back on my childhood, so many of my happiest memories have her in them.
I am so grateful that I got to know her, love her, and have her be such an important part of my childhood. She will be deeply missed, but the memories she gave us will stay in our hearts forever. Rest Peacefully Aida 🕊️

Thank you all for the kind words and memories shared about Mom. She would be over the moon to see how much love she brought to others and how much love was reflected back.
I want to share an update also regarding the mass on Saturday in case you have not seen,

When I think of Mama O, I think about how much personality was packed into such a small, seemingly quiet woman. She was always dressed to the nines, had a fiery temperament, and this completely unexpected sense of humor. She could come out with something completely out of nowhere that would catch you off guard and have everyone laughing. You just never knew when it was coming.
One Halloween, I showed up in a wig, skirt, button-down blouse and glasses I absolutely did not need. Out of nowhere, she took one look at me and named me “Teach.” And Teach I remained.
Anytime I was invited to a family gathering, at some point she would break out into dancing and try to get everyone else to join her. She was the Energizer Bunny of living-room salsa.
She also had such a beautiful sense of style. I remember going to the beach with them and she arrived looking like she was ready to walk onto a movie set. That was just her. She always looked put together, no matter where she was going.
I always loved watching Rebecca open birthday gifts from her mom because they were so thoughtful and always so pretty—earrings, serving pieces, blankets, and little things that made a house feel like a home. She had a way of making her surroundings festive, colorful and full of life.
And then there are the little memories that still make us laugh. I remember having breakfast at her apartment and her putting ketchup on the table, only for Rebecca to rattle off what felt like twelve other sauces she would rather have—barbecue sauce, honey mustard, chipotle mayo…anything but ketchup.
Those are the things I’ll remember—the laughter, the dancing, the beautiful gifts, the way she dressed, the colorful surroundings she created, the things she would unexpectedly say, and all those ordinary moments that don’t feel ordinary anymore.
I’m going to cherish those memories of Mama O very fondly. I feel lucky to have them, and I will miss her dearly.
Rest in peace ❤️
Teach
Thank you for this very colorful and special tribute to mama O, Dana!!! I’m laughing at the sauces and it couldn’t describe her any more perfectly. Thank you soo much love you TEACH!!! 🥹♥️🥹♥️
This was so beautiful, Dana – thank you ❤️❤️❤️

John. My brother, thank you so much for that beautiful and colorful tribute to our mom. I was flooded with memories and all the fun parties of the past and all the good times we spent together in family. We were all blessed to share in such love and togetherness. Thank you for the beautiful reminder and you love for mom ♥️♥️♥️
So beautiful, thank you John ❤️❤️❤️
Dear mama,
If ever there was a kind, generous and thoughtful spirit to walk this earth it was you.
Your beauty, smile and your style was unique and individualistic, like a combination of a soft whisper in the wind, a soulful dance to the beat of a drum, a painted sunset on a beach, the sound of Spanish guitar carrying a melody throughout the air, hot rain on a tin roof in a tropical forest, a delicate flower at its peak bloom…
You touched many lives with your soulful spirit and distinctive ability to be mindful of little details of each person and treat everybody with a different special touch.
I want to thank you, mom, because in the faces of adversity and challenge, you gave us the power and ability to have character, poise, creativity, grace, ingenuity, integrity, resilience, courage, truth, independence and somehow to balance it all with steadfast empathy, love and authenticity while maintaining our ground. You pushed us to acquire and embody significant strength to be able to handle the most difficult things in life. Little did we know how much we would need these abilities to deal with this moment alone…
Thank you for making us who we have become today. Our core values around loyalty, love and kindness are rooted deep within us because of watching your fierce devotion to your own values and moral code and how you upheld them, even in the most difficult times.
Your fiery and passionate spirit burns bright within each of us and the lives you’ve touched with your magic will remember your presence, for your generosity left lasting impressions on those you cared for with your tokens of affection and heartfelt gifts.
We will miss you mama. Our lives won’t be the same without you, however we won’t let go of your memory, we will honor and embody your strength and resiliency, your spirit maintains a light unmatched. 💛
Rest easy in the ultimate peace where there is no conflict or pain, and in the gentle hands of God, we love you Mom 💛
❤️❤️❤️ Beautiful Beckie
