Yarmouth, Iowa
Resided in:
Stony Brook, New York
Dale E. Carman, 89, “darlin’ husband” of 32 years to Louise, passed away on June 12th, 2024, in Stony Brook, New York. He was born on June 13th, 1934, on a farm in Yarmouth, Iowa. Son of the late James and Eva (nee Fischer) Carman.
Dale, a United States Air Force Veteran, served 10 years actively and 30 years in the Reserve. He received various honors, which included the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Air Force Longevity Award with 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster (OLC). Dale retired at the rank of Major.
Finding immense fulfillment and joy in flying, Dale went on to join the upper echelon of aviation, becoming a Pan Am Pilot, where he was a “Sky God” for 26 years (1965-1991). After their demise, he continued his piloting career with Delta Airlines until his retirement in 2001.
His career granted him the opportunity to fulfill his love of traveling the world, taking him through 6 continents. Though he traveled far and wide, Alaska held a special place in his heart. The scenery, wildlife, and good fishing brought him back year after year.
When he wasn’t enjoying walks to watch the sunset with his wife and dogs, Taylor and the late Sawyer, Dale was keeping busy by reading, doing the daily crossword puzzle, sudokus, and playing card games with his family, whom he loved very dearly.
Dale is survived by his wife Louise, his children Andra Renee Carman and Michael Carman, his siblings Marie Basset (Greg), James Carman (Neoma), many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews whom he adored. He is predeceased by siblings Margaret Ann Thomas, David Carman, and Glenn Carman.

Uncle Dale ❤️ My favorite memory is dancing with him downtown Letts, Iowa when a band was playing. I will forever hold the memories of walking on the beaches with him and Louise on our summer beach trips with the whole Carman family ❤️ my heart smiled every time I knew I’d get the chance to see uncle Dale. There was something about him that was so beyond special.
Lots of love,
Amber and family
My brother in law Dale! What a good and generous and caring man. Always cared about others with a smile on his face and compassion in his heart! Loved flying and made it his career. I will miss him greatly and his humorous nature. A great family member RIP Dale!
He was my uncle, but my heart always thought of him as my second dad. God’s speed and peace on your final flight, this time to heaven. You’ll be much missed, and have left a void in many hearts that will never filled, but your laugh, smile, and memories remain. Your life and presence will always be legendary.
Uncle Dale was a wonderful uncle and so fun. I giggled when I read he got a “good conduct medal” in the Air Force because he was so ornery. He told me he once put a goat in their high school in Yarmouth overnight. My dad adored him. Rest in peace sweet Uncle Dale. And my love to you Renee, Mike and Louise!!
So sorry to hear of Dale’s passing.
My condolences to the family.
My former husband Scott and I were the witnesses at Dale and Louise’s wedding. Louise and I had already been friends for years, and I was so delighted and charmed by Dale. What a sweet and loving man! I will always think of him with love.
My great Uncle Dale was such a passionate, kind and loving man. He gave the best hugs and always kissed me on the cheek. He had a way of making those around him feel so special. He loved his family immensely and his wife Louise made his eyes sparkle. I remember lots of card games when he would come back to Letts to visit and I always loved hearing stories he would tell about jigs life, travels and his siblings growing up. We will all miss him dearly. See you on the other side!
Dale was always fun to be around with a great smile & spirit. He served the country he loved & was a pioneer in early aviation history. Well done good & faithful servant. Rest in peace.
I’m so sorry. My sincere condolences.
I’m so sorry. My sincere condolences to you Louise and the whole family. All my love to everyone.
Sadly we did not have the privilege of knowing Dale very long, but in such a brief time it was clear that he was the definition of a true gentleman who was quite accomplished in countless ways, but we believe that the true measure of a man is the way he treats his dogs. We are hoping to come back as one of Dale and Louise’s canine family members… A great loss to all who were blessed to know Dale.
With Love and Sympathy, Nick and Cathie
I have fond memories of Uncle Dale. I remember going hunting with my dad, Uncle Dale, Uncle David and others in Iowa. I have fond memories of political discussions with he and Louise. He will be missed and DeAnna and I will keep him and his Family in our hearts and prayers!
Dale was our wonderful neighbor since 1996. He was filled with kindness and had a great sense of humor. We will miss him. Heaven has gained a beautiful soul.
