Demetrios “Jimmy” Gonis, age 49, of Commack, NY passed away peacefully on July 24,2026 surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on December 16, 1976 to Louie and Bertha Gonis, Jimmy was a lifelong resident of Commack, NY, attended Commack High School and was a proud veteran of the United Stated Navy. He was a lover of music and the life of the party. He was a dedicated friend who always showed up for others in need.

Jimmy married the love of his life and best friend, Katie, on June 29, 2003 and together they had three wonderful children.

Jimmy is survived by his wife, Cathryn (Katie) Gonis, his children James (23), Jack (17) and Elizabeth (15) as well as beloved family dogs Lucille and Nora.

He is also survived by his parents Louie and Bertha Gonis, his parents-in-law Michael and Geraldine Nutley, his siblings Andreas Gonis, Angel and Mario Baboukis, John and Helen Gonis and Bessie and Rob Swist. He was the best brother-in- law to Michael and Kelly Nutley, Tara Nutley & Leslie Borg and Christina and Dermot O’Connor.

Jimmy was loved by his many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

He was pre-deceased by his Grandparents James and Bessie Lymber and Andreas and Antigone Gonis as well as his loyal companions Quincy and Otis.

Jimmy’s celebration of life will be Tuesday at 2PM at Changing Times on Larkfield Road, all are welcome to join us and raise a glass to Jimmy.

  9. candleI served with Jimmy in the Navy in VAW-123. Jimmy was the funniest guys I’ve ever met. He was always the life of the party. And always shared his baklava when his family sent him care packages on the boat. He will be greatly missed.
