It is with heavy hearts that the Hannigan and Mascia families announce the unexpected passing of Diane (Dee Dee) Katharyne Mascia on Jan 12 at Stony Brook University Hospital in NY. She was surrounded by her loving family, and was honored with a moment of silence by the medical staff as she made the gift of organ donation. Dee Dee will live on as a hero to the recipients and in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Dee Dee was the loving daughter of Carol (Roger) Hannigan and the late Frank (Sandra) Mascia. She is survived by sister, Mary Katharyne Rizzo; brothers Rick (Beth) Mascia and TJ (Molly) Mascia; adoring nieces: Katharyne, Megan, Sofia, Emerson and Blythe, nephew Owen, and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins; long time partner, Anthony Forte and his extended family, who loved her as their own.
Her bright smile and infectious laugh were immediate and constant. This endeared her to the many people she encountered while growing up in Pittsburgh, graduating from Peters Township High School, NC State University and working as a Flight Attendant with American Airlines. Dee Dee spent almost 30 years with American, based in BOS, SFO, JFK and most recently, CLT. She enjoyed connecting with her fellow crew members, passengers and the occasional celebrity, including her idol Cher, whom she met on her very first flight.
Dee Dee had a tender heart for animals, especially her beloved canine companion, Mushy. She was quick to laugh, even if it was at her own expense when cleaning up after one of her frequent mishaps with coffee or wine. Her knack for remembering all the words to countless songs in almost any genre, due to her love of music and concerts, delighted those around her. Whether in the air or on the ground, her lively spirit will be missed dearly. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Greensboro, NC. Memorial donations may be made to The American Heart Association (heart.org) or Live On NY (liveonny.org), a non profit organization for organ and tissue donation.

I met Diane just a few weeks into my freshman year at NC State. We were in the same dorm and learned we both were from Greensboro, NC. This resulted in many trips together back and forth to Greensboro. It’s hard to believe this was 34 years ago this fall because it seems like yesterday.
Diane was a nice, kind, and pretty girl. I enjoyed so much getting to know her. I was so sorry to hear about her passing. Condolences to the Mascia family.
My sincerest condolences to the Mascia family.
We may have lost a beautiful human being, but the spirit world has gained an angel! I will forever miss the laughs, hugs, singing songs and that sparkly face. You have made a big impact on me and when the day comes I see you again, I will hug you and tell you to directly. Go in peace and light! Love you! Charlie
I will remember you FOREVER! ❤️
Sincerely, Brad Mullner
I miss you, can’t believe it’s been 3 years. I think about you all the tome and remember how much we had flying together and our layovers. May you rest in peace.
Love, L
How many years we spent together Fri and Sat nights growing up watching the Love Boat and eating popcorn~ omg when your Mom taught us to make it Carmel popcorn. And yes way back then you had a framed picture signed by Cher!!?
To this day when I hear the HBO Music I think of the tv in the window and Bitty barking wanting her chicken!
All our sleepovers, trips, (seeing Andy Gibb!), cheerleading days and laughter!!!
To read of all those who spoke of you with American~ I remember when you stayed with me in Atlanta for your Delta interview and you brought 2 unmatched shoes!! I think we stayed up all night talking and laughing that night.
If not for my mom you would have been my maid of honor in my wedding~ I am so grateful you were there with me.
. Our adult years we lost touch but how you were always in my heart of joyful memories. How much I love and treasure our memories…especially our first meeting on Merlin Drive with you spinning in the chair claiming “ what a howl”
Every hioliiday when you and Rick would fly to be with your Dad (you with a handful of magazines)! I remember watching you fly in the air…You are an angel dear DeeDee…I will always look to the stars and see you shining.
I love you ❤️ .
