Born in: Tarrytown, NY
Resided in: Centereach, NY

It is with heavy hearts that the Hannigan and Mascia families announce the unexpected passing of Diane (Dee Dee) Katharyne Mascia on Jan 12 at Stony Brook University Hospital in NY. She was surrounded by her loving family, and was honored with a moment of silence by the medical staff as she made the gift of organ donation. Dee Dee will live on as a hero to the recipients and in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Dee Dee was the loving daughter of Carol (Roger) Hannigan and the late Frank (Sandra) Mascia. She is survived by sister, Mary Katharyne Rizzo; brothers Rick (Beth) Mascia and TJ (Molly) Mascia; adoring nieces: Katharyne, Megan, Sofia, Emerson and Blythe, nephew Owen, and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins; long time partner, Anthony Forte and his extended family, who loved her as their own.

Her bright smile and infectious laugh were immediate and constant. This endeared her to the many people she encountered while growing up in Pittsburgh, graduating from Peters Township High School, NC State University and working as a Flight Attendant with American Airlines.  Dee Dee spent almost 30 years with American, based in BOS, SFO, JFK and most recently, CLT. She enjoyed connecting with her fellow crew members, passengers and the occasional celebrity, including her idol Cher, whom she met on her very first flight.

Dee Dee had a tender heart for animals, especially her beloved canine companion, Mushy.  She was quick to laugh, even if it was at her own expense when cleaning up after one of her frequent mishaps with coffee or wine.  Her knack for remembering all the words to countless songs in almost any genre, due to her love of music and concerts, delighted those around her.  Whether in the air or on the ground, her lively spirit will be missed dearly.  A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Greensboro, NC. Memorial donations may be made to The American Heart Association (heart.org) or Live On NY (liveonny.org), a non profit organization for organ and tissue donation.

  38. I met Diane just a few weeks into my freshman year at NC State. We were in the same dorm and learned we both were from Greensboro, NC. This resulted in many trips together back and forth to Greensboro. It’s hard to believe this was 34 years ago this fall because it seems like yesterday.
Diane was a nice, kind, and pretty girl. I enjoyed so much getting to know her. I was so sorry to hear about her passing. Condolences to the Mascia family.

  39. candleI am stunned. I can not believe that my friend Diane “Sam” to me, is gone. Anyone fortunate enough to have known her or spend any time with her knows how very special she was. Anything you were doing just got better when “Sam” became a part of it. She could light up a room or plane and your heart. She was truly a very very special lady. I will miss you dearly “Sam” but will never ever forget you. Thank you for being a part of my life. My heart and prayers go out to her entire family and all who were lucky enough to know her. “Sam” was a gift.

  40. I am just learning of Diane’s passing. I am still trying to accept it, and I can’t even imagine how hard that is for her family and Anthony. Diane and I were roommates our freshman year in college, and we’d still kept in touch, at least once a year, after all these years. There’s not enough space for me to say how beautiful she was, both inside and out, or how sweet, caring, and hilarious she was, or any of her other wonderful qualities that she exemplified as a person. The world has lost the most beautiful soul, but Heaven has gained the most beautiful angel. Until we meet again, sweet girl, I pray that you can rest in peace and know that you will never be forgotten.

  41. candleI’ll remember that beautiful smile forever, you could light up anyone’s day. Always a joy to fly with you. Can’t believe your gone, but never forgotten.
My sincerest condolences to the Mascia family.

  42. candleMy sweet, darling Diane.
We may have lost a beautiful human being, but the spirit world has gained an angel! I will forever miss the laughs, hugs, singing songs and that sparkly face. You have made a big impact on me and when the day comes I see you again, I will hug you and tell you to directly. Go in peace and light! Love you! Charlie

  43. candleDiane, my sweet friend, I’m shocked and so very sad. You were truly a ray of sunshine. Whenever I saw your name on the crew list I knew we would have a great flight. We shared so many stories, lots of laughs, hilarious late night games while traveling across the continent or the Atlantic. You will be so missed by all who were privileged to know you. Sending thoughts and prayers to Anthony and your family. 😔

  44. We all miss you so much ! Your spirit, your beauty your positive nature and passion for life. Our Transcon ✈️years were the best times we all shared together! Thank you for the gift you gave us all- a bright light in our hearts! My condolences to all your loved ones.

  45. Heaven has another angel. Still can’t believe you are gone. Until we meet again. Love you with all my heart “Dee” Love, “Car”

  46. candleIt was ALWAYS a gift & a joy to know you & fly with you! I will miss your smile & our laughs we shared.
I will remember you FOREVER! ❤️

  47. My deepest heart felt condolences for your horrible premature loss of sweet DeeDee! Carol, Roger, Rick and extended family and friends, the tears we have shed are a drop in the bucket in the suddenness and finality of this shocking bad news. It was a pleasure growing up next to you all. Again sorry for your loss. 8>(
    Sincerely, Brad Mullner

  48. I first met Diane in December of 2010 at gate D58 in Las Vegas. She had just finished working a flight in from JFK, and I was the agent who met her flight. She was absolutely stunning! Over the next three years, from time-to-time, I would see her in the mornings at the Las Vegas airport getting ready to work a flight back home to JFK. I am an avid horse-player, and I would have her cracking-up laughing over all my horse racing stories. She used to call me “talking horses” and we would both laugh-out-loud!! I have missed seeing her over the years since, and will truly miss her over the years to come.

  49. Diane and I pledged sorority together in 1988 at NC State. We were roommates for a year. She was always so kind, smiling and funny. I wish we had stayed in touch. While we have not talked in 2 decades, her passing really hit me. Rest In Peace, Diane.

  50. Happy Birthday D.
I miss you, can’t believe it’s been 3 years. I think about you all the tome and remember how much we had flying together and our layovers. May you rest in peace.
    Love, L
