Edward A. Benz, 78, of Nesconset, NY passed away on October 18, 2025. Ed grew up in Merrick, graduating from Calhoun High School in 1965. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving three years on active duty in Vietnam. Ed was honorably discharged in 1968, and shortly thereafter met his future wife, Nancy Haran, at the Baldwin Manor. The couple married in 1971, moved to Long Beach and later settled in Nesconset, where they raised their two children.
Ed received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Architectural Engineering from The New York Institute of Technology. He began a successful career in facilities management at MetLife, and then Dowling College, where he oversaw campus operations and security. Ed was most proud of his position at Computer Associates, where he headed the development of the Islandia Headquarters and continued as Assistant Vice President of Facilities and Security for almost two decades. In his last professional role, he served as Director of Plant Operations at Suffolk Community College, before retiring in 2018. Ed also played an active role in his community, serving as a member of the Town of Smithtown Zoning Board of Appeals for over 15 years, and then as Chairman of the committee throughout his retirement.
Ed took pleasure in simple activities: he loved his pugs, gardening, tending to his pool, enjoying a cigar and a having a meal with a glass of wine at his favorite restaurant, Sempre Vivolo. Ed’s greatest source of pride was his family. He lived a full and loving life with his wife, Nancy, for 54 years. Ed was extremely proud of his two children Courtney Mollura and Tony Benz, and his son-in-law Joe Mollura. He adored his two grandchildren Ella and Dylan. His devotion to his family showed no limit, as he selflessly donated a kidney to his son, Tony. Ed was preceded in death by his brother Doug, but leaves behind brother, Rich Benz, and many cherished sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews
All those who were fortunate enough to know Ed admired his strength, intelligence and sharp sense of humor. He was a good neighbor, steadfast friend, caring husband, supportive dad and loving grandfather. He will be missed by many.

May Ed rest in peace. He was such a nice guy. I enjoyed our talks over the past years. Ed kept me posted on the entire Haran family every time we spoke. To my Godmother, Nancy, I’m sorry for your loss. The pictures/video are so nice to see. You have such wonderful memories to get you through this difficult time. Love to you and the entire family.
