In Loving Memory of Elizabeth M. del Barrio

March 10, 1950 – April 27, 2025

With deep sorrow and enduring love, we announce the passing of Liz del Barrio, who left us peacefully on April 27, 2025, at the age of 75. A beloved wife, mother, and friend, she touched every life she encountered with grace, compassion, and a radiant kindness that never dimmed.

Born on March 10, 1950, in Bogota, Colombia, Liz lived a life defined by generosity and an unwavering devotion to her family. She was the heart of her home—a source of strength, comfort, and unconditional love. Her warm smile and gentle spirit welcomed everyone, and she had a unique gift for making people feel seen, heard, and cherished.

She was the most wonderful mother, raising her children with love, wisdom, and endless patience. As a devoted wife, she shared a bond of true partnership and affection that was admired by all who knew her. Her kindness extended far beyond her family, touching neighbors, friends, and strangers alike.

Liz will be remembered not only for her selflessness and beauty—inside and out—but also for her quiet strength and the legacy of love she leaves behind. She taught us how to live with compassion and grace, and how to give without expectation.

She is survived by her loving husband Jorge, children Stephanie and Paul, grandchildren Aiden, Isabella, Sophie, Mateo, and Ella, and her brother Fernando, all of whom will carry her memory in their hearts forever.

A celebration of her life will be held on May 4th, at Branch Funeral Home of Commack, where friends and family are invited to honor her life and the profound impact she had on the world around her.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the ASPCA.  Anyone who knew Liz, knew she was a lover of all animals, especially dogs.

Her love was a gift to all who knew her. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit lives on in every act of kindness we carry forward.

  1. candleMy condolences to the family. So many great memories Liz that you left behind. You are going to be missed by so many. May you rest in peace.

    • *Letter to my cousin Elizabeth (Chavita), from my garden and my sorrow*

Today, after a downpour that seemed to come from the soul of heaven itself,
I saw a white calla lily in my garden—clean, open,
bathed in droplets that I couldn’t tell if they were rain or tears.

I stood there looking at it for a long while,
like someone trying to understand the invisible.
And I understood that in that flower was my grief,
my deep sorrow over her departure.
Its whiteness reminded me of the stillness that absence leaves behind,
and each droplet sliding down its petals spoke to me of what I feel…
of what I cannot quite put into words.

Chavita, it hurts so much to know that I can no longer embrace you,
that I couldn’t be near Jorge, Paul, Stephanie, and their children
in this moment when the world trembles and everything becomes silence.
      My heart is with them,
I think of them every day, and from this distance—so heavy—I accompany them with all that I have.

I like to imagine her arriving at that place where our ancestors dwell,
that sacred space where the light is warm and time cannot wound.
There, surely, she was received with joy: Mamita, Papatuco, the aunts, Ratona, my Monita,
my mother, my father, Germán, Héctor, Capi, Pepe…
      the list is long,
but we remain united, because I’m certain only her physical body faded away.

Now that she’s already there, please tell me: how do you see us?
I’ll wait for you in my dreams, so we can talk.

      Thank you, Chavita…
Thank you for everything life allowed us to share.
Thank you for being, in so many moments, my cousin, my sister, and my friend.
But above all, thank you for always opening the doors of your home to me,
for making me feel I had a refuge there,
a place where I was always welcome.
Your home was my home, and that is something I will never forget.

Today, this white calla lily covered in water is the perfect image of what I feel:
the beauty of having crossed paths with you in this life, and the pain of your absence.
But it is also my hope, because like that flower,
I too trust that one day we’ll meet again,
      when the soul returns home
and the long-awaited embrace is finally fulfilled.

From this shore and from my heart, I embrace you, I embrace myself, and I embrace everyone who feels your absence.
      With love,
      Cacaya

  9. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Liz! I so admired Liz. She was truly one of a kind. Her love of her hard work always impressed me. Her easy and generous affection for my children and my dog, as they were growning up here at 60 Sutton, was a joy – never failed to have treats for the dogs and kind words for and about the children! And most defining was her deep, abiding, profound love of her family – from her mother, to Jorge (“best husband in the world”), Stephanie, Paul and their families was really wonderful to behold. She spoke with such pride of her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments, showing videos of the grandkids, she was often on the phone with Stephanie in Denmark when I would pass by – or Paul or his wife, she felt very lucky to have had the family and life that she had. But you all know that. I am so sorry she is gone too soon!
