Frank V. Caruso passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 83.

Born in Manhattan on June 16, 1943, Frank was raised in Astoria, New York. Throughout his life, he was known for his extraordinary work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit, devotion to his family, and genuine compassion for both people and animals.

Frank spent much of his career as an accountant for the New York Racing Association. He later worked as an accountant for BEST — Backstretch Employee Service Team — an organization dedicated to providing care and support to the people who care for the horses. He continued working at BEST until June 2025. For 25 years, Frank also worked at H&R Block, helping countless people with their taxes.

But one job was never enough for Frank. A true entrepreneur, he owned and operated several businesses and pursued numerous ventures throughout his life — remarkably, all while continuing to work full time.

Over the years, Frank worked as a driving school instructor, operated the Daily News home delivery franchise for all of Smithtown, owned an Amoco gas station in Commack, owned Coventry Wines & Spirits in Stony Brook, and owned a burial vault company. Frank was always working, building something, or pursuing his next venture. His drive, determination, and willingness to work hard were simply part of who he was.

Just as important as his work ethic was Frank’s compassion for others. He was always willing to help someone in need and was generous with his time, knowledge, and support. Helping people came naturally to him, and throughout his life, countless people benefited from his kindness. Whether it was family, a friend, a coworker, or simply someone who needed a hand, Frank was someone people could turn to. Caring for others wasn’t something he did for recognition — it was simply part of who he was.

Frank was the beloved husband of Pat Caruso and a devoted father to his son, James Caruso, and daughter, Caryn Brennan. He was a loving grandfather to Jeevan Caruso, Kayla Brennan, Kristin Brennan and Ryan Galloso.

Frank’s compassion extended to animals as well. He had a lifelong love for them, and his children grew up in a home that was always filled with beloved pets — dogs, a cat, rabbits, lizards, fish and parakeets — all of whom were considered part of the family. At Christmas, Frank made sure the dogs were included in the celebration, complete with their own presents and personalized Christmas stockings.

His love for animals continued throughout his life and into his work at BEST. It was there that Frank took in a stray cat he named Fraidycat and made him the beloved office cat. Frank worked long hours and could usually be found at the office seven days a week, so he and Fraidycat spent countless hours together and formed a very special bond. Frank even had a “catio” built at the office so Fraidycat could safely enjoy the fresh air outside.

Fraidycat’s story was a perfect example of Frank’s caring nature. Whether it was a person or an animal who needed help, Frank had a way of recognizing that need and doing something about it.

Frank was predeceased by his parents, Cira and Frank Caruso, and his brother, Joseph Caruso.

He will be remembered for his remarkable work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit, but even more so for the way he cared for others. His generosity, compassion, devotion to his family, and willingness to help both people and animals were at the heart of who he was. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, coworkers, and all those whose lives he touched.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at The Branch Funeral Home in Smithtown on Friday, September 4, 2026, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. and 7:00–9:00 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church in Kings Park on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Frank’s memory to Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoption Center, in honor of his lifelong love and compassion for animals.
