Gary W. Matthews

gary matthews

Gary W. Matthews, 76, of Smithtown, New York, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Thursday, March 7, 2024. Gary passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born and raised in Albany, New York, Gary was the son of the late Irene Matthews and William R. Matthews, of Albany. Gary was the beloved husband of Carol (Burns) Matthews for almost 56 years; and the loving father of Christian (Kristy) of Mint Hill, N.C., Justin (Danielle) of Commack, N.Y., William (Alyssa) of Fort Mill, S.C. Gary was the proud and tremendously loved “Poppi” to eight grandchildren, Ellieana, Sean, William, Peyton, Everly, Valentina, Avery, and Emily. Gary will be joining in heaven his beloved sisters Glorya, Gayle, Gene (Douglas), and his brother Gerard. Additionally, Gary was the brother-in-law of Kathleen Domenico, Janet (deceased) and Robert Campbell, and Patricia and Michael Zabinski, and Douglas Botsford (deceased). He was also the very proud uncle of 18 nieces and nephews, and several grandnieces and grandnephews. Gary graduated from Vincentian High School in 1965, which is also where he met the love of his life and future wife, Carol. He also attended Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. In 1979 Gary and Carol moved to Smithtown, N.Y., joined Saint Patrick’s Community, and lovingly raised their three sons. Poppi truly enjoyed putting smiles on everyone’s face, whether it be with his crazy costumes, his silly pranks, or his famous “sense of humor”. However, Gary’s greatest joys came from spending time with his sons, their families, and most importantly with his beloved wife. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Gary’s name can do so by visiting the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center website at giving.mskcc.org.
