Born in: Glen Cove, New York
Resided in: Smithtown, New York

George Gates, 64, of Smithtown, NY, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and saltwater stories.

Born with a kind heart and an adventurous spirit, George was a beloved son who never forgot the values of family and integrity instilled in him from an early age. He carried those values throughout his life, becoming a devoted husband, a proud and supportive father, and a loyal friend to many.

George shared a deep and enduring bond with his wife, built on partnership, respect, and unwavering love. As a father, he was a steady guide and constant encourager—always present at life’s important moments, offering wisdom, humor, and a reassuring embrace. His family was his greatest joy and proudest accomplishment.

To his friends, George was dependable and genuine, the kind of man you could call at any hour. He had a gift for conversation, a warm smile that put others at ease, and a laugh that was impossible to forget.

George also found peace and freedom in the ocean. A passionate surfer, he felt most at home riding the waves at sunrise, board under his arm and horizon in his sights. The sea was his sanctuary—a place where he reflected, recharged, and celebrated the simple beauty of life.

He will be remembered for his strength of character, his generous spirit, and the deep love he gave so freely. Though he may no longer walk beside us, his presence will be felt in every crashing wave, every shared story, and every act of kindness inspired by his memory.

George’s life was a blessing, his memory a treasure. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.

  7. candleGeorge was a great friend and surfing buddy. We would go back and forth on conditions, time, what boards to bring, etc. He was someone who looked out for me, being he was years older. We would call each other to link up in the mornings. He would drive me on with his 4×4 and we would have breakfast (egg sandwiches which he usually picked up for me). I have such beautiful and fond memories paddling out with George. He will be missed on the beach and in the line up. He was a true soul surfer!! Such great energy. He always stuck with it all year round!! In my mind, this is absolute goals with coming of age. Rest in Peace George ❤️
