August 22, 1962 ~ January 4, 2026

Gregory S. Medwig Sr., age 63, died peacefully in his home in the loving company of his wife on January 4th, 2026 after bravely fighting bulbar-onset ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Greg was born on August 22nd, 1962 in Smithtown, New York and was raised by Walter “Buddy” & Rita Medwig.  He graduated Holland Patent High School in 1980, and immediately enlisted in the United States Army.  He was stationed in Fort Carson, Colorado, where he operated and maintained tanks.  Following his service, he returned to Long Island as a commercial bayman and met the love of his life, Patricia Walsh, who he went on to marry in 1989.  Greg also worked for the LIRR as a trackman, driver, and welder.

Greg was the cherished husband of Patricia, caring father of Taylor (Brian) & Gregory Jr., and adored Pop to Jackson & Bennett.  He was a loving brother to Richie, Patty, Debbie, Robbie, Keith, & Den.  He was a beloved son-in-law, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend to many.  He was loved by all who knew him, including his four beloved Labrador Retrievers.

Greg enjoyed fishing, flying kites & driving RC cars with his grandsons, listening to classic rock, trying his luck with scratch-offs, and spending time with his family.  He was thrilled to achieve his life-long dream of swimming with dolphins.  He will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Team Gleason Foundation, which improves the quality of life for ALS patients.
