Irma Angela Russo, 91, of Manhattan, formerly of Hagerstown, Maryland and Old Bethpage, New York, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2024, surrounded by the abounding love of her family. Born in Mola di Bari, Italy, she was the daughter of Contessa Rosa Carrieri and Conte Vincenzo Carrieri. When she was young, after her parents passed during WWII, she and her four siblings were adopted by their aunt and uncle Antonietta and Andrea Russo, who eventually brought the family to Brooklyn in the early 1950s. In her early years in this country, she worked at American Express in their language translation department prior to her marriage.
A loving and devoted mother and wife, Irma was an accomplished chef and baker. She enjoyed using her skills to host gatherings for her family and friends, especially at the holidays. Irma welcomed everyone with open arms, no number of guests was too many. She enjoyed passing down her passion for the culinary arts to her children and grandchildren. She was a dedicated daughter and sister with a deep devotion to her family. She also had a tremendous passion for travel.
A true renaissance woman, Irma excelled at anything she put her mind to. She created things for the home, played tennis, bowled and loved riding her bike across the countryside. No goal was unachievable for Irma. She was a beautiful and intelligent person with a captivating and kind personality that drew people. If she wasn’t traveling, engaging in sports, cooking or creating things for the home, Irma was volunteering to care for the elderly. A devoutly religious person, she sought to spread love and kindness to all she met. She will be missed.
Irma is survived by her husband of 70 years, Carmine; sons Vincent and his wife Sharon, and Andrew and his wife Lorraine; daughter Alicia and her partner Michael; grandchildren Angela and her partner Gomer, Nick, Joe, Andrew and his wife Brittany, Michael and his wife Rachel, Daniel and his spouse Cole, James and his fiancée Sophia, Tatiana and her partner Noah, and Nicole; and great grandchildren, Ariana, Kylie, Guglielmo, Stanford, Andrew Jr., and Brady. She is also survived by her sister Margaret and proceeded in death by her brothers Italo, Franco, and Alberto. She was adored by numerous nephews and nieces and their families.
