In Loving Memory of James Mario Calise
April 7, 1935 – October 18, 2026
James Mario Calise, 91, passed away on October 18, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
A devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and cherished friend, James was a man whose warmth, humor, and unforgettable personality left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He was the quiet strength of his family, a man whose presence brought comfort, whose stories brought laughter, and whose love was felt in countless ways.
Growing up on Houston Street in New York City, James’s early years were filled with the energy and excitement of city life. It was there that he developed his passion and remarkable talent for baseball. A gifted first baseman, James had the extraordinary opportunity to try out for three professional baseball organizations: the New York Giants, Washington Senators, and Minnesota Twins. In 1954, he received an invitation from the New York Giants to attend a tryout at the legendary Polo Grounds. It was a remarkable accomplishment for a young man from Houston Street and a special chapter in his life that his family will proudly remember.
His love for baseball stayed with him throughout his life. James was an avid New York Yankees fan who loved watching and cheering on his favorite team. Baseball was more than just a game to him; it was a lifelong passion and a source of wonderful memories.
James later proudly served his country in the United States Army, carrying with him the determination, dedication, and strength of character that would remain with him throughout his life.
James went on to enjoy a successful career on Wall Street as a trader at L.F. Rothschild. He took great pride in his work, bringing dedication, determination, and a strong work ethic to the fast-paced world of finance.
James was also a man of extraordinary generosity, always willing to help others and give to those in need. One cause especially close to his heart was the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, an organization he loved contributing to and supporting. His generosity came from the heart, never seeking recognition, but simply wanting to make a difference in the lives of others. His kindness and giving spirit were among the many qualities that made him so special.
Of all the chapters in James’s life, none was more meaningful than the love he shared with his beloved wife, Sheila. Married for 63 beautiful years, James and Sheila built a lifetime of memories, a loving home, and a family that meant everything to them. Through life’s joys and challenges, their devotion to one another remained unwavering. Sheila was his partner, his best friend, his greatest love, and the center of his world. Simply put, his Sheila was his everything.
Together, James and Sheila raised four children who were a tremendous source of pride and joy. James was the loving father of Jennifer and her husband Robert; James and his wife Marie; Michael and his late wife Joan; and Melissa and her husband Donald.
He was also the proud and loving grandfather of 12 grandchildren: Gabrielle, Robert, Sophia, Victoria, Antonio, James, Hunter, Harrison, Priscilla, Vincent, Donnie James, and Ava. Each held a special place in his heart, and the love, laughter, and memories they shared will forever be treasured.
James had a wonderful sense of humor, a gift for conversation, and a natural ability to make everyone around him feel welcome. He loved sharing stories, reminiscing about years gone by, and enjoying a good laugh. Whether surrounded by family and friends or simply enjoying a quiet moment, James had a way of making even the most ordinary day memorable.
He found happiness in life’s simple pleasures, especially spending time at the beach, feeling the warmth of the sunshine, and enjoying the company of those he loved. For James, the greatest moments in life were often the simplest ones.
Throughout his 91 years, James lived a life rich in experiences, accomplishments, friendships, and love. From his childhood on Houston Street and his remarkable baseball opportunities to his proud service in the Army, from the beautiful life he built with Sheila to the generations of family who will carry on his legacy, his was truly a life to be celebrated.
James will be remembered for his unforgettable personality, his wonderful stories, his sense of humor, and, above all, his unwavering devotion to his family. Though his passing leaves an emptiness that can never be filled, the love he gave and the memories he created will live on forever.
A remarkable life, 63 years of enduring love, and a legacy that will live on for generations.
Forever loved, forever missed, and forever our James.
