October 17, 1928 ~ August 25, 2023
Born in:
Orange, NJ
Resided in:
Ridge, NY
John passed peacefully on August 25th, 2023. He was born and raised in East Orange, NJ, the youngest of 3 children. John was honorably discharged from the US Army in 1951. He graduated from Northwestern University with a Master of Arts degree. John taught in the English Department of Commack High School where he also served as department chair. He went on to teach English, Writing, Mixed Media and other classes for over 45 years at the Suffolk County Community College (Selden) campus, teaching for well over 65 years. John cherished his role as an educator and truly enjoyed his many interactions with his students.
John was also a gifted artist, creating both large and small sculptures of people and animals with a particular fondness for the female form, carousel horses and giraffes. His artwork was exhibited at the Mather Hospital sculpture shows on several occasions, including a 9-11 remembrance displayed in the lobby where many visitors left flowers and other tokens. John was an athlete and avid tennis player. He enjoyed a good sporting competition, be it softball, volleyball, horseshoes, bocci or basketball. John loved his family dearly and was generous with both his time and resources. His dry sense of humor, kindness, and willingness to help will be sorely missed. John leaves behind his beloved wife of 49 years, Jeannette (Maue), their dog Rafer, his step daughter Barbara (Larry) Hirsch, his son Steve, daughter Cydney Holley, and grandsons Tomas and Nicholas (Gianna) Nicotra and their children Mason and Rylee Nicotra. He was a loved brother-in-law of the Maue sisters, Lenore, Dyanne (Mitch), Carol (Lon), Robin (Randy), Jennifer (Peter), Liese, Jessica and Erika; and beloved Uncle Jack to the King, Muller and Lockwood families. John was predeceased by his parents Arthur John and Martha Gabosch, his sisters Alice and Martha, his stepson Randy Nicotra and his niece Judy. Visitation services will be at Branch Funeral Home Miller Place Wed 8/30 7-9 pm, and Thur. 8/31 2-4 & 7-9 pm. A Celebration of Life Service will be held there on Thursday 8/31 at 7:30pm where all will be welcome to share their stories and memories. Private burial services are Friday.

We’re sorry to hear about the passing of Uncle Jack. Sending love.
Very sorry to hear about the passing of our Uncle Jack. He will be missed.
When I was about three or four we lived at my Grandparents at 10 Morse Avenue. My Dad must have still been in the Army because I don’t remember him until we moved to 78 Hoffman Blvd.
Our neighbors had a daughter about a year older Janet Silverman I think. She knew what was around the corner so we frequently walked around the block.
One time on our walk we decided to explore what was across the street on Cleveland Terrace, Watsessing Park.
We walked into the park and up and over and crossed a bridge over the “brook” and picked a nice spot to sit next to the Brook with our feet dangling over the edge.
After a few minutes I noticed uncle Jack walking over the bridge to us. He must have been 14.
Little did we suspect that our little walk had turned into a mini man hunt.
I still have that image in my mind of Uncle Jack crossing that bridge and taking us home.
We are sorry about Uncle Jacks passing. We miss him already.
Dear Jeannette and family, please accept our heartfelt condolences on the passing of your husband, John. He will surely live on in the hearts and memories of those who knew him.
I am so sorry to hear of Uncle Jack’s passing. He meant so much to Judy and always treated us with love and kindness. He will most certainly be missed.
I remember visiting Uncle Jack and Jeanette when they lived in Setauket NY. Drove out there with Dana and Daa,
