Matthew G. LoNigro

matthew lonigro

With broken hearts, we sadly announce the sudden passing of Matthew Gerard LoNigro,
on May 10, 2023. He was only 51 years old. Matt was born in Rockville Centre, NY on July 1,
1971 to Richard and Priscilla. He graduated from Newfield High School in 1989 and later
attended St. Joseph’s College. Matt spent the majority of his career helping to build his family’s
company, Port Jefferson Sporting Goods. After selling Port Jeff Sports, he was currently
employed by BSN Sports.
Matthew is survived by his loving wife, Julia and his most precious children: Matthew Jr.
(20) and Abigail (16). He is also survived by his beloved parents, Richard and Priscilla LoNigro.
He will forever be remembered by his siblings: Rick LoNigro, Bobby LoNigro (Amy), Michael
LoNigro (Angel), Craig LoNigro (Kristin), Kevin LoNigro, Keira Kelly (Bob), Koren Hart (Tim), Paul
LoNigro (Donna), Shauna LoNigro Kerr (Rob), Brianne Cardaci (Nick), and he was a proud uncle
to many nieces and nephews, including his beautiful goddaughter, Brittni.
Throughout his life, Matt was involved in many organizations near and dear to his heart.
He was the current President of the Miller Place Athletic Booster Club while being a member of
the Hope House Ministries Advisory Board and the Hope House Golf Committee. He was also a
Board Member for the LICH Backpack Pirates and the Christmas Magic Organization.
An avid supporter of all youth sports, Matt’s true passion was coaching. He coached his
son’s youth lacrosse team in Miller Place and was a pee-wee soccer coach for St. Louis de
Montfort. He was also involved in girls lacrosse, coaching his son and daughter’s teams for
many years. Never wanting a child to miss an opportunity to play, he would often step up and
coach teams just to prevent them from having to fold. He became the PAL Director for Miller
Place Boys Lacrosse and later was named to the Board.
Matt was a loving son, brother, father and husband. He was a fiercely loyal friend, who
loved his family, friends and community deeply. We are all better people for knowing him and
are forever changed now that he is gone

You have been a best friend since HS, we can go months without talking but when we hooked up it was like we didn’t skip a beat. I remember many wonderful memories that will last a life time, sitting in the hallway and thinking of a mascot we didn’t have and till this day it stands (mad dogs) we made this up.
the first varsity game when we had no uniforms, you and I went to port Jeff and printed them before our first game.
Going tothe Hofstra lax games togethe, especially the Hobart game, I’m tearing up as Ii write this as it was a memory of our that we still talked about 35 years later,!
your fight with Q, I stood behind you no matter what. “
Old “faithful” You-were a beast with that stick. So much fun playing lax with you
The indoor fight you started lol when mr Armstrong lost his rolex watch
And most importantly, the work you put into Hope house ministries
, I love my brother until we meet again, a piece of my heart will be missing without you

  23. Praying for grace and strength. Matt was a wonderful business partner and friend. The St John the Baptist football brotherhood mourns with you. He was a great man and fiend to so many, inclding St. Anthony’s High School. He will be missed but his memory

  26. A kind soul who will be truly missed here in the Miller Place, NY community.

A special person who was taken too early but will be remembered by all!

Your kind heart and dedication to the youth here in our community is an example as to what a true community leader he was!

  27. candleI was Matt’s CSR from April 2020 – May 2022. Immediately he became one of my top 4 favorite sales reps of all time. He seemed to call at the perfect time with his usual quick witted banter. I’d be stressed out and on the edge during busy season and his tone of voice and comments always brightened my day and calmed me down. When the opportunity came to switch departments, I told him since 2 of my favorite reps retired, I was considering switching and I wouldn’t be his CSR anymore. I said I’d stay on as his CSR if he’d retire soon. His response was he has a good 5-6 years left before he’d even consider lightening his workload. He enjoyed being a part of the sports programs and his kids were still active on sports teams but if it would make me happy to change departments, I needed to do it. He’d be okay. Over the last year, we stayed in contact. He’d call me to vent about how much he missed me and no CSR could ever do as well as I did and that I was his favorite CSR he’d ever had. He asked if I would take him back as a sales rep and I always told him, if he could convince management to let me have 1 sales rep, I’d take him. (He ultimately ended up with a with a CSR that I knew would take good care of him) I’m going to miss his random calls, his voice, trash talk, and words of wisdom. He loved his family and community so much. His untimely passing hit me hard and we’ve only had a work relationship the past 3 years. I can’t even fathom the profound loss the family and community are going thru. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I miss him already.

  28. candleDear Abby,
Today and always, may loving memories bring you strength and comfort. With a heavy heart, I give my sincere condolences to you and your family.

  29. I worked with Matt at BSN. I was the buyer that helped place all of his custom lacrosse uniforms. He was a pleasure to work with and will truly be missed. Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends!

  30. candleOur heartfelt sympathy and sincerest condolences to the entire LoNigro family, especially Julia, Matthew and Abby. There are no words to express how sorry we are to hear of Matt’s untimely passing. He was kind and generous to a fault, who gave more of himself to his family, friends, and community. He touched so many lives along the way and we’re all better people for knowing him.

Rest in peace Matt, you will missed.
