Smithtown, NY
Nelson Fried (“Nellie”), was born on February 28, 1946, in Queens, NY, to Martha and Emil Fried. On April 13, 2024, Nelson peacefully transitioned from this world, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. Throughout his life, Nelson embodied the virtues of patience, sacrifice, and a deep compassion for animals. He was a master of wit, a “sniper” delivering the perfect joke at just the right moment. His humor was a true complement to his spirited wife, Susie, with whom he is now reunited in eternal peace.
Nelson made significant contributions to the aerospace industry, notably working on pivotal projects at Grumman, including the A-6 Intruder aircraft and the Apollo Lunar Module. Following his tenure at Grumman, Nelson dedicated over 40 years of his life to the various iterations of Verizon. He found joy in exploring the wonders of science, admiring classic cars, solving puzzles, fishing, lending his talents to building stages for youth group productions and assisting family and friends in need, whether it was fixing things around their homes, or helping them move – even across the country.
Nelson’s presence will be deeply missed by his sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and all those who were fortunate enough to be held close by him. Among those who will feel his absence most profoundly is Ed Englehardt, whose daily check-ins were a testament to their enduring bond. As we bid farewell to Nelson, Nellie, Dad, Daddio, and Grandpa, let us carry forward the memories of his laughter, his kindness, and love, as we look forward to being reunited with him again.
