robert o'neil, jr.

February 19, 1933 ~ November 18, 2025

Born in: Brooklyn, NY
Resided in: Smithtown, NY

Robert O’Neil was born in Brooklyn, NY, to Robert and Helen O’Neil on February 19, 1933. He was the second oldest among his seven siblings: Joan, Doris, Pat, Barbara, Tommy, Gerrie, and Kathy.

As a young boy, Robert worked hard to help support his family, delivering ice, working in pizzerias, and taking other jobs. Later, he joined the Army, serving as a radio operator in the Korean War.

He met the love of his life, Henrietta, and they married on July 2, 1955. They had four children: Linda, Susan, Maureen, and Robert. Shortly after his first child was born, he joined the New York City Police Department. Acts of heroism included delivering babies, saving firemen from burning buildings, and courageously responding to all sorts of distress as a member of the NYPD. Early in his career, he was able to purchase a home for his growing family in Suffolk County, where he lived for the rest of his life.

Robert was well respected and loved by all that knew him. He taught himself to be a professional carpenter and a creative cook, among other talents. He was kind and generous, giving his time and talents to help others, including renovating homes, lending tools, building hardscapes for neighbors, and providing financial assistance to those who needed it. He possessed a wonderful sense of humor, bringing warmth to gatherings with witty jokes and contagious laughter. As a father, grandpa, and great-grandpa, he loved his family so well through unmatched hospitality and wide-ranging conversation around the table. He took interest in his family’s lives and modeled tenacity in the face of adversity. His life was a blessing to all that knew him.

He is survived by his three siblings: Tommy (AnnMarie), Gerrie (Joey), and Kathy (Rocco); his four children: Linda (David), Susan, Maureen, and Robert (Angie); nine grandchildren: Sean (Johanna), Colleen (John), Jacqueline, Joanne, Alexandra, Brittney, Christopher (Kate), Alyssa (Ryan), and Branden (Amber); and seven great-grandchildren: Iain, Ella, Jane, Wesley, Tate, Luna, and Brenna.

May all of his loved ones who grieve take comfort in his long and well-lived journey that ended in reunion with his wife, Henrietta.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Bob made us laugh, made us think, delighted us with his wit and baking skills. A soldier, one of NY’s Finest, he protected the public and was always quick with a smile or a joke. May his light shine forever. Rest in peace.

  2. My eldest brother was a strong unique and intelligent man, A Veteran, a retired NYPD Sargent, a devoted husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, uncle and friend. His sharp mind would keep you intrigued, his wit in laughter! A man who will stay in my heart and mind and prayers forever along with all our family who has gone before. Love doesn’t die because you left us for Heaven and Etta but remains from the memories you left us with. Rest in eternal peace my brother.

    • Emmanuelle… Thank you so much for your kindness both here and on Facebook. My Dad was truly a great man. and I miss him so much. I can’t tell you how much I truly appreciate your kind and thoughtful words! Miss you, my friend!! ❤️❤️

  3. Your dad was one of a kind. The way you spoke of him painted a vivid picture. He was fearless, deeply honest, and truly heroic in every sense, all while being a devoted family man. I’ll never forget how at ease he made me feel whenever we talked during his visits to Syracuse.
I know it brings you deep comfort to picture him now at peace with Jesus and reunited with your beautiful mom. Holding your family close in thought and prayer during this difficult time..

  4. Linda,
This tribute to your father is beautiful. What struck me was your dad was always smiling . He lived a life well lived and was loved. I am sorry that all your family is hurting but know he will always be with you and is waiting with your mom for you to come over.
    Peace be with you,
    Connie and Bill

  5. Sincere condolences to Cousins Alyssa and Linda. Please know we are praying for your Beloved Grandpa and for all of the O’Neil family. Warmly with Love, Cousins Diane & John Ocedek.
