Selma (Kopit) Oher, a beloved mother, mother in law, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away on July 9, 2023, at the age of 92. She was born on January 19th, 1931, in Brooklyn, New York, to Samuel and Gertrude Kopit. Selma spent most of her life in Brooklyn until she eventually moved to Miller Place, where she continued to touch the lives of those around her.
Selma was a remarkable woman who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. After retiring from the Salvation Army in the 1990’s, she kept herself busy with helping to take care of her grandchildren.

She also had a fondness for jigsaw puzzles and spent countless hours engrossed in their challenge. Reading the local newspaper and books were among her favorite pastimes, allowing her to expand her knowledge and engage with the world around her. She loved doing crossword puzzles, playing solitaire, arts and crafts and coloring. Television was another source of enjoyment for Selma, providing her with entertainment and keeping her up-to-date with current events. She enjoyed traveling, gardening and going to the movies.

Family was incredibly important to Selma, and she cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren. Their presence brought immeasurable happiness to her life, and she delighted in their company. She was a loving and caring mother to her two sons, Jay R. Oher and Jeffery Oher Sr., who both held a special place in her heart.

Selma was an active member of her community, finding companionship and entertainment at the local senior center. There, she formed lasting friendships and engaged in friendly competitions of Bingo, Kings In The Corner, and other card games. The senior center was a place where she could connect with others, sharing laughter, stories, and memories.

Pets also held a special place in Selma’s heart, and the beloved family cat, Princess, brought her immense joy and companionship during her later years. Their bond was a testament to Selma’s nurturing and caring nature.

Selma was preceded in death by her son Jay R. Oher and her parents, Samuel and Gertrude Kopit.

She is survived by her son Jeffery Oher Sr. (Dorothy) of Hawaii, her daughter-in-law Susan Oher of Miller Place, her brother Norman Kopit (Roz) of Connecticut, and her nephews Josh and Matthew (Melinda) along with two great nieces Holly and Hannah.

Her memory will also be cherished by her grandchildren, Michael, Christina, Jeffery Jr., Jasmine, Jadelyn, Jenifer, and Julie and her great grandchildren Kaile’a, Ale’a, Kahuhipa, Lilly and Jayce.

Selma will be remembered for her kind heart, her love for her family, her sense of humor and her unwavering dedication to those she held dear.
