Born in: South Bend, Indiana
Resided in: Smithtown, New York

Marvin Roth, 99, of Smithtown, NY passed away peacefully at his residence at Whisper Woods Assisted Living on November 21st, exactly 2 months shy of his hundredth birthday. Born on January 21, 1926 in South Bend, Indiana, he was the son of Irving and Belle Roth and brother to Saul Roth.

Marvin’s family moved to New York when he was a child, and he resided in Brooklyn until he moved to Sunrise Village in Sayville, Long Island in 2009.

Marvin was a US Army surgical technician in Germany and France during WW II. He was proud of his service, and the fact that he helped saved lives.

After returning from his military service, Marvin attended Brooklyn College, where he met his future wife, Lydia, and was on the wrestling team. He graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biological Sciences.

Marvin worked for a time as a private investigator before his long career in insurance, first with Greater New York Mutual Insurance Company, where he rose to the position of Vice President of Claims, and then with The Robert Plan as a case analyst. He enjoyed his employment in this field, working until he was 80 years old.

Always a vigorous, active person, Marvin loved to be outdoors, especially in the sun. He exercised and lifted weights, and enjoyed riding his bicycle well into his 90’s. He was an avid marksman and hunter, who served as a principal of the Lawyers Gun Club in New York. He had a good sense of humor and loved meeting and talking to people. He had a trove of stories to share.

Predeceased by his wife, Lydia, they shared 56 years of partnership and love. He is survived by his children Lisa J. Roth (Peter Hester) and Douglas M. (Sandra) Roth, and his three grandchildren, Giselle (Robert) Gerardi, Douglas R. Roth, and Alyssa Roth.

A service to honor his life will be held at 3:30 pm on November 30th at Branch Funeral Home of Commack, with visiting hours from 2-5pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Doctors Without Borders and the Wounded Warrior Project, in his name, reflecting his lifelong commitment to giving to others.

  2. I always felt like I had Marvin by everything that Lisa and Pete would share with me about his tremendous life. Be it talking about the insurance business or just the different things that he had accomplished, made me feel like we had some great connection. He will be missed but I am sure the fond memories of him will live on forever. My sincerest condolences to all the family and friends. Rest Easy Mr. Roth.

  3. My deepest sympathy and condolences to the family. Rest in peace Marvin Roth. May your loving soul continue to watch over your loved ones from heaven above.

  4. I grew up on the same block as the Roth’s and became very good friends with Douglas Marvin’s son … as youngsters we were always impressed with Marvin’s athletic ability and his built … if he wasn’t riding his bike , he was swimming or walking to the school yard to play paddle ball … you could tell through his military service that he was a no nonsense guy who often donned his military fatigues … a proud American and patriot that being 60 now myself I can relate more now to how he carried himself … I’d like to take this time to offer my condolences to a wonderful man who took extremely good care of himself as well as his family … god be with all of you at this time as I offer my condolences for your loss
