Guestbook

  1. Sending condolences from Miller Place to his loved ones. I grew up in the neighborhood and whether on foot or driving pass each day, there was steadiness in his presence on that corner that has been noticeably absent.

It wasn’t until the past year that he coolly introduced himself in the James Bond way, “Jasper, Robert Jasper.” Lilia’s bark wasn’t typically inviting but the day my sister and I first met Jasper, Lilia was dopily bouncing on the red ball in the yard behind him. She dropped her guard as we dropped past the fence for a chat. We hope her re-homing has been a smooth transition and that all other changes have been for you all too.

Jasper habitually sitting in his usual spot each night was a landmark. His care for the deer at the back fence was too. There was a peacefulness in knowing he was consistent and consistently. Wish we met sooner. We hope he’s resting peacefully.

  2. After wondering why I had not received a Christmas card I stumbled on Bobby’s obituary. We first met in 1946 when we were 10 years old and my family moved from Flatbush to Madison Street in Ridgewood. The Jaspers lived around the corner on Woodbine Street. We both went to school up the street to PS93 along with Walter Dorsam and Ronnie Honigman. We often walked the length of Myrtle Avenue after dinner just window shopping and hanging out. Later the four of us would cruise around in Bobby’s 30’s Ford coupe with no backseat. I believe the car was a hand me down from his older brother Walter. We also took a number of trips to the Jasper summer place in far out Commack. Coincidentally I graduated from Grover Cleveland High School with Bobby’s future sister-in-law Anita Wessels. Though we went our separate ways after HS, military, college, marriage, etc, we did stay in touch. Years later my wife and I were fortunate to know and spend time with Bobby and his late wife Linda. We hadn’t seen ech other since early 2022 as I had a series of medical issues that year and we just never got together again. Bobby was just about my last link to a bucolic childhood in Ridgewood. He will be missed, though I can still hear his truly distinctive laugh.
