  1. Julia always said that she liked to read. So, we read. This wise older sister had inner sight. As a youngster. she forcefully protected her dad’s chair and place at the kitchen table. With hands cupped, she rolled and shaped meatballs with attentiveness. She assisted her sister in securing an academic medal. Her household skills were innumerable. Her ability to love wove itself to shoulder many responsibilities. She rightfully understood that the command to love meant not to marginalize people or objects. Can we say the same?
While I grieve, I am more deeply pierced by my dear sister’s life and how it has been a blessing. Knowing that we are saved from meaninglessness, Julia lived her truth with assurance. Faith is not understanding. Faith is knowing. In a world so self-possessed, Julia had this uncanny ability through faith to extract honey from a rock by her gentility, wisdom, common sense, and compassion. She texturized all she touched with finesse. Julia’s actions were articulated by convictions emanating from a deeply rooted inner core…faith. How about us? She would say so many times that we bring all before God and then surrender to what God wants. How about us? How deep are our roots? Does ‘surrender’ frighten us? Her legacy is both gift and challenge, as we, who continue to journey, remember that the journey is the destination. Each is gifted. Each journeys passing through bitter valleys and flourishing hillsides. Each brings values. Each impacts relationships. Life, then, impels us to ask pertinent questions. Is engagement with shallow deceptions satisfying to our motivations; or, do our engagements allow us to embrace life differently because these are rooted in a deeper place? My darling, beloved sister, your voice modulates and staccatos inside my head, never to be forgotten. Heaven is nowhere but everywhere. You now enjoy the promise and fullness of God’s presence. Well done, good and faithful servant.
Read in peace and bless us. As always, R.
